- Palm oil has so many usages. Palm oil's four
main traditional usages in food products are
for cooking and frying, shortenings, margarine
and confectionery fats. 10% of palm oil products
including biscuits, frying oil, sauces, mayonnaise,
chips, chocolate is marketed in Europe.
- Derivatives of palm oil and palm kernel oil
can also be used in soaps, shampoo, cosmetics
and detergents for their lathering properties.
- Palm kernel meal is used as feed for livestock.
- Fibres from fonds of palm oil tree can be
used to make particleboard.
- Another strength of oil palm is the ability
to mimic the dual purpose forest, it is a profilic
producer of biomass or fibre products in the
form of empty fruit bunches, oil palm fronds
are being used for commercial products like
pulp and paper, medium density fibreboard, automotive
components, etc.
- Palm oil is a superior of dietary energy.
It has the potential to replace fish oil in
aqua feeds since fish oil production is becoming
increasingly expensive and difficult to obtain
in many countries practicing aqua culture.
- The natural form of palm oil has carotenoids
and tocopherols that are antioxidant and that
have been shown to inhibit the formation of
cancer.
